Editorial

Working in the wedding industry allows me to connect with incredibly talented creatives, including wedding dress designer, Shehzarin Batha from Shehzarin Batha Couture. Recently, I had the pleasure of learning more about her background, experience, and signature style.

She also shared some tips for brides when shopping for a wedding dress. So without further ado, let’s jump into this Q&A with wedding dress designer – Shehzarin Batha.

Tell us more about your background and training.

I began my career studying Fashion Design at NIFT India. Then, when I was 18, I travelled to Australia to study at RMIT. Then I had the opportunity to pursue my post-grad studies in creative pattern-making at the prestigious London College of Fashion.

It was here that I also engaged in further elective training in period corsetry and haute couture techniques, investigating the industry greats of our time and interning with McQueen. I returned to Melbourne all the more inspired to encourage a love of couture.

Starting in 2002 under the label Corset Queen, I focused on the intricate craft of corsetry and tailoring. In 2011, after winning a City of Melbourne Award for a start-up business, I started my first atelier in Kensington.

What is your source of inspiration?

There is no better inspiration than women and nature. Both are a gift to the world. Nature is an infinite orb of beauty, and every woman is a goddess, divine in her own form. A goddess that deserves to feel empowered and celebrated.

I feel most refreshed and at home when I’m in nature and working with my clients. Couture is my art, medium, expression, and vehicle. It’s about embarking on a journey of self-discovery, self-expression and metamorphosis.

What is your signature style?

The signature style of Shehzarin Batha Couture is reminiscent of powerful and beautiful women fond of fine craftsmanship, romantic renaissance and meticulous attention to detail. We are constantly rewriting the rules of fashion while paying homage to the savoir-faire of couture.

A woman should look and feel like the best version of herself on her special day. Our silhouettes manifest elements of today’s high fashion and glamour without unnecessary elements that distract the eye and diminish a woman’s natural beauty.

Our structured bodices are our main specialty. Using traditional construction methods and modern textiles, we create corsetry of impeccable fit and proportion. Our unique silhouettes are developed in-house with inventiveness and willingness to try new things.

Why do brides choose to work with you?

Brides choose to work with us because of our commitment to them from start to finish. They often tell us how our service is refreshingly helpful and personalised and how our clients feel at home when visiting our boutique.

We make it a point to listen attentively to the ideas and desires of our clients whilst guiding them with our knowledge and experience. Our process is collaborative – we do not block ourselves by an attitude of “one way only”; we all collaborate to bring an idea to fruition.

Our small and dedicated team adhere to a strict standard of dressmaking for every dress, regardless of budget constraints or style. We put a high value on teamwork, camaraderie and symbiosis.

Any tips for brides when choosing a wedding dress designer?

Always remember to trust your instincts – they never lie. Too often, we see brides overwhelmed and confused by online choices and resources. It might be surprising, but you don’t need to try on a hundred gowns to find the one.

When you trust the process, are sure in your decisions and always be true to yourself – you’ll find the one. The perfect wedding gown is timeless but comfortable, full of character and reflects the best version of yourself.
