Hi there! Welcome to the TORA blog, a journal about our lives, travels, fashion, and style. Stay a while and say hello!

Hi, I'm sonya.

How do you feel about building a connection with your wedding photographer? Does it seem strange? Maybe you feel the standard is to talk to the photographer once while hiring them, check a box, and not hear from them again until the wedding day. That could be the process for some wedding photographers, but my way is much more personal.

I’m all about getting to know you and you getting to know me. Because the more we get to know each other and build our connection and relationship, the better your overall experience will be.

But that’s not the only reason. Here are five more reasons why getting to know your wedding photographer (and vice versa) before the big day arrives is so important.

1. You’ll spend the majority of your time with your wedding photographer.

In fact, you’ll spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than you will with your spouse.

Your photographer be there with you as you slip into your gown and strap on your shoes.

They’ll watch as you walk down the aisle and take your partner’s hand at the altar.

Their camera will document the tears and the laughter, the toasts and the dancing.

And your photographer will capture the final moments as you and your new spouse take your exit.

Even though you might not be directly interacting with your wedding photographer every moment of the day, you still want to know that you and your guests will enjoy having them around, and ensure that there will be good vibes all around.

If you get to know your wedding photographer, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that they are trustworthy, respectful, professional, and helpful to everyone involved (you, your guests, and vendors).

2. Connection leads to trust.

Building trust with my clients means a lot to me. And I’m sure knowing that you’re in good hands – and trusting me – is important to you, too.

I believe building a relationship and connection leads to trust, so I do my best to build a solid one with you by showing up, bringing my whole self, and exceeding your expectations. I do this by:

  • Getting to know you personally and asking the right questions. For instance, I’ll ask you questions like what you value most in one another, what your vision for the day is, who is most important to you, and more.
  • Keeping in touch with you throughout your wedding planning journey and being as helpful as possible while making your experience with me seamless. I am also available to you when you need me to answer any questions or give advice/tips.
  • Randomly checking in on you every now and then for no reason other than to ask you how you are and how the planning is going.

More than anything, I want you to know that the connection we build is genuine. And because of that, I would never think of breaking the trust you place in me.

3. Connection and trust lead to comfort.

When you’ve connected with someone and trust them, you start feeling comfortable around them. The same goes for your relationship with your wedding photographer.

As we get to know each other, you’ll feel more comfortable around me, which means you’ll feel more at ease in front of the camera. And that ease and comfort will show up in your photographs.

You might even feel a bit more daring during your engagement session and start posing on your own. Totally fine, by the way!

This isn’t to say that I won’t provide guidance and direction when you need it. No matter how comfortable you feel, I’m always there to support you and give you what you need to help you look and feel your best in your photographs.

4. It helps your wedding photographer capture your relationship.

Understanding you and your fiance and having a genuine connection with you two enables me to capture your natural chemistry and create emotive moments.

This is why it’s so important to tell me as much as possible about your relationship. Things like what you value about one another and what you like to do for fun. The more I know, the more I can photograph the essence of your relationship.

An engagement session also greatly helps with getting to know one another. You getting to know me and vice versa. You two will get a sense of how I work, and I’ll understand how you interact with each other.

5. The relationship extends to your family and friends.

Relationships are important to me, and connecting with my couples extends to their family and friends.

I’m not the kind of wedding photographer who just shows up to take photos and not engage with anyone. I make a genuine effort to get to know the people closest to you. I memorise the names of everyone in the wedding party and will absolutely know who your mum, dad, and grandparents are.

This all circles back to the first point of why you should get to know your wedding photographer. You’ll be spending a lot of time with me, and you’ll want to know that you and your closest people are taken care of, seen and heard. You’ll want to know that we all get along and that there’s nothing but positive vibes on your wedding day.

Let’s Get to Know Each Other

You can spend countless hours getting to know a wedding photographer, only to realise halfway in that it’s a one-way relationship.

A professional wedding photographer who truly cares will get to know you, too, so they can bring out the best in you and your partner.

I’d be honoured to be your wedding photographer. The one you can trust in, knowing I’ve got you, and that I know what’s most important to you so you can enjoy the process.

And the one who will deliver the beautiful wedding images you will continue to fall in love with year after year.

Drop me a note, and let’s build a connection.
